1745 Battlefield Viewpoint

The flat ground around Prestonpans doesn't look like much until you stand at this viewpoint and realise you're looking at one of Scotland's most decisive military moments. The 1745 Jacobite Rising came to a head here, and the perspective from this spot shows exactly why the Battle of Prestonpans played out as it did.

It's a straightforward visit - you're essentially stopping at a vantage point to take in the landscape and, hopefully, read whatever interpretation boards are on site. The terrain is genuinely important to understanding what happened: open ground, good sightlines, nowhere for soldiers to hide. If you're into military history or Scottish rebellions, this matters. If you're just after a nice view, it's fairly ordinary.

The whole thing takes twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're reading properly and thinking about the tactics involved. It's free and accessible whenever you fancy stopping by. This works best as part of a broader East Lothian itinerary rather than a destination in itself - pair it with a walk around nearby Seton Sands or the beaches, or base yourself at Haven Seton Sands Holiday Village just down the road if you're doing a week in the area.
