Abbotsbury Hillfort

The Iron Age ramparts are still properly impressive, even after two thousand years of weather. Abbotsbury Hillfort sits on a commanding ridge above the village, and you'll feel the defensive logic the moment you start climbing - the views across the Dorset countryside stretch for miles, which is exactly why someone decided to build a fortress here around 500 BC.

It's a straightforward walk from Abbotsbury village, gaining height gradually through farmland. The fort itself consists of two sets of earthwork banks running across the hilltop, still clear enough to read the shape of the thing. There's not much to physically explore - no buildings, no artefacts - but that's rather the point. You're reading the landscape itself, imagining what life looked like when this was a thriving settlement.

History enthusiasts will find it rewarding, particularly if you've got an interest in Iron Age Britain. Walkers get a decent leg-stretch and proper views over West Bay and towards the Chesil Beach. Kids might lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're already keen on archaeology. Allow an hour round trip from the village, longer if you're taking photos or just soaking in the vista.

Free to access, obviously - it's Dorset Council land. If you're staying at Litton Lakes nearby or Freshwater Beach Holiday Park a bit further out, this works as a half-morning walk before heading elsewhere. Early morning is worth the effort; you'll have the place to yourself and the light is lovely across the hills.
