The farmyard smell hits you first when you arrive at this working museum just outside Mintlaw - honest earth and livestock, nothing sanitised about it. You're walking through actual farming buildings from across Aberdeenshire's agricultural past, with genuine tractors, old machinery, and animals that staff still care for daily. It's genuinely free, which feels generous given how much there is to poke around.

The appeal splits fairly clearly. Young children will spend a solid two hours here, especially if animals are about - there's a proper hands-on feel to the place. Older kids might lose interest faster unless they're into vintage engines. Adults who grew up farming or have rural roots get proper nostalgic value; you'll hear lots of "my grandfather had one of those" comments. It's not a slick visitor experience - more like stepping into someone's actual life's work - which is partly the charm.

Allow a good two to three hours if you're browsing properly. Best visited on a day when staff are actively working with the animals rather than during quieter periods. The site can get muddy, so wellies are sensible even in decent weather.
