Ad Gefrin

The royal palace once stood here, on a windswept Northumbrian plateau near Wooler, though you'd never know it from a casual glance. Ad Gefrin was the primary residence of the 7th-century Anglian kings - a proper seat of power - yet today it's just open moorland with interpretive panels and the faint traces of what archaeology has uncovered. The actual remains are subtle, almost invisible to the untrained eye, which is precisely why the site feels so authentic. You're standing where real history unfolded, not in some reconstructed visitor experience.

History enthusiasts will make the pilgrimage happily enough. The walk across the moor is pleasant, takes about thirty minutes from the car park, and the views across Northumberland are genuinely excellent. Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're really into archaeology or Anglo-Saxon history - there's not much hands-on activity once you've read the boards. Walkers, though, will appreciate the moorland setting and the chance to combine it with other Northumbrian rambles in the area.

It's free to visit and open year-round, though weather can turn properly grim in winter. Allow an hour or so including the walk. If you're based at Riverside Wooler Holiday Park or Highburn House just outside town, Ad Gefrin works well as a morning excursion before tackling bigger attractions elsewhere. It's the sort of place that rewards genuine curiosity rather than casual tourism.
