Adderbury Lakes sits just outside Banbury and is one of those places that rewards you for bothering to find it. A string of old quarry ponds turned nature reserve, it's genuinely quiet - the kind of spot where you'll actually hear birdsong rather than traffic.

You can walk the perimeter paths without breaking a sweat, though the terrain's a bit variable depending on recent weather. The water itself is crystal clear in places, and you'll spot cormorants, grebes, and if you're lucky, herons working the shallows. There's proper habitat management happening here too - reedbeds, open water, scrubland - which means the wildlife shifts with the seasons.

This is primarily a walkers' and birdwatchers' destination, not a destination for kids who need play equipment or ice cream vans. That said, it's brilliant for families with older children who can manage a two-hour ramble and actually care about spotting things. Spring and autumn are peak birding seasons, so time your visit accordingly if that matters to you.

The reserve is free and accessible, though it's worth checking locally whether there are any access restrictions before you go. If you're staying at The Pig Place nearby, Adderbury Lakes makes for an easy morning outing. Even from Newton Grove or Glamping Thorpe a few miles further out, it's worth the short drive to break up a park-based holiday with some genuine countryside.
