Ainsdale Pine Woods

Walk into Ainsdale Pine Woods and you're immediately surrounded by towering conifers that block out most of the sky. It's genuinely atmospheric - the kind of place where you half expect to bump into a ranger or stumble upon something from a Victorian novel.

The woodland stretches across a decent chunk of land just outside Southport, offering proper forest vibes without needing to drive hours out of town. The paths are well-trodden and generally easy going, though it can get muddy after rain. Most people can wander through the main sections in an hour or so, though there's enough to keep you occupied for two if you're in no rush.

It works best for families after they've had their fill of Southport's seafront attractions. Kids either love the woods or find them a bit samey - depends on their age and patience for nature. Walkers will find it pleasant enough, though it's not dramatic enough to write home about. History types might be interested in how the pines came to be planted here, though that story isn't dramatically signposted.

From the Southport Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - only 3.6 miles away - it's an easy side trip. No entry fee that I'm aware of, and you can turn up whenever you fancy. Spring's decent when things start greening up, though honestly autumn's when the light filters through those trees most beautifully. Bring good shoes. The forest floor's always slightly boggy.
