Aldermoor Copse

A proper woodland walk through the New Forest without the crowds that descend on the more famous spots near Lyndhurst. Aldermoor Copse is dense, atmospheric forest - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. You're walking under old hardwoods, the ground soft with years of leaf litter, and if you time it right (autumn's best), the light filters through in that golden way that makes everything feel a bit magical.

It's ideal for walkers wanting something quieter than the main forest trails. Kids will manage it fine if they're comfortable on uneven ground, though it's not a destination with facilities or a visitor centre - just trees and peace. You could easily spend 90 minutes wandering through, longer if you're the type to stop and sit. There's no entrance fee or parking charges that I'm aware of, which is refreshing.

The real advantage is proximity to Lyndhurst and the wider New Forest trails. If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Roundhill, Hollands Wood, or Long Meadow - this is the sort of place for a morning ramble before heading to the bigger attractions. It fits perfectly into a forest holiday without feeling like you're ticking boxes. Just go early if possible. Even quiet forest walks draw people once the day gets going, and you'll want that solitude to yourself.
