Alders Wood

Alders Wood is a proper walk through mature woodland just outside Tunbridge Wells, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's not vast - you're looking at a couple of hours maximum to get the most of it - but the forest floor is thick with ferns and the light filters through the canopy in that way that makes you forget you're only a few miles from town.

The paths are well-trodden and easy enough for families with decent walkers, though it can get muddy after rain so proper boots matter. There's something satisfying about woodland that doesn't try too hard - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just trees doing what trees do. History buffs might find the old woodland management interesting if they know what to look for, but this is mainly for people who want a straightforward forest walk without the crowds you'd get at the bigger attractions around here.

If you're staying at Apple Acres or Glamping at Honnington Farm - both within a couple of miles - it makes a solid morning or afternoon out. Combine it with a day trip into Tunbridge Wells proper and you've got a decent half-day sorted. The Hop Farm is a bit further but works as a second-day excursion if the weather's decent. Go early on weekends if you can; that's when it gets busier with local dog walkers. Free to access, obviously, and no time restrictions - just turn up.
