Alkincoats Park

The Pennine moorland around Colne doesn't scream obvious tourist magnet, but Alkincoats Park is the sort of place that rewards a proper wander. You're walking through a working landscape here - moorland, woodland, and open grassland that changes character depending on the season. The reserve sits on the edge of town, so it's barely five minutes from cafes and shops, yet feels genuinely wild once you're in.

Walkers will get the most from it. The terrain is straightforward enough for families, though it's not a manicured park - more the real thing, which means muddy patches and uneven ground after rain. Keen birders and plant spotters will find themselves proper occupied. Depending on the time of year, you might spot curlew, lapwing, and various moorland birds that you won't see elsewhere. Spring brings the wildflowers; autumn's when the colours really shift.

There's no entrance fee to speak of - it's a public space, which is how these things should be. Budget two to three hours if you're taking it slowly with kids, less if you're just after a brisk circuit. Early morning's best if you want to see wildlife rather than walkers.
