Allen's Copse

Walking into Allen's Copse feels like stepping through a private door into proper woodland - the sort of place where you actually forget you're still in Hampshire. It's a modest forest near Alresford, nothing flashy, but the canopy is thick enough that even on grey days the light filters through in that particular way that makes you want to stay longer than planned.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is part of its appeal. You get woodland paths, ancient trees, and the chance to actually hear yourself think. It's the kind of place walkers come to reset - twenty minutes in and your shoulders drop about three inches. The undergrowth changes with the seasons; spring brings bluebells that genuinely stop you in your tracks, autumn turns everything copper and gold.

If you're staying at Hampshire Hills or Wigwam Holidays nearby, both within six miles, Allen's Copse makes an easy half-day outing. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour - there's no play area or obvious focal point, just trees and more trees. But if you've got walkers in the group or anyone who needs some headspace, it's well worth the short drive from Alresford. Admission appears to be free, and you can honestly spend as little or as long as you like wandering the paths. Go early morning if possible. The place transforms when it's quiet.
