Allotment Plantation

Walking into Allotment Plantation near Burford is like stepping into someone's very old garden experiment gone wild. The woodland here has that half-managed feel - trees that were planted generations ago now tower overhead, creating dappled shade that shifts through the day. You won't find manicured paths or visitor centres. What you get instead is a genuinely quiet walk through mixed forest, proper peaceful.

The plantation itself tells a story about how the Cotswolds have been shaped over centuries. Trees that were originally planted as a resource - timber, perhaps shelter for livestock - have now matured into something that feels almost natural. History buffs will appreciate that; anyone after a decent woodland stroll will just enjoy the break from open fields.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're based at Wysdom Touring Park nearby. An hour there, maybe ninety minutes if you're pottering, and you've got genuine woodland without tramping into the Cotswold Water Park crowds. Take a map though, as signage is minimal. Spring's particularly good - bluebells come through in patches, and the canopy's still light enough to see where you're going.

Not a destination in itself unless you're serious about trees and quiet corners. But as a punctuation mark in a Cotswolds week? Excellent. Kids might find it a touch dull compared to somewhere more obviously interactive, but if they're the type who like climbing on fallen logs and looking for wildlife, they'll be entertained.
