Allt Capel-Ifan

Tucked into the hills above Carmarthen, Allt Capel-Ifan is a proper forest walk that catches most visitors off-guard. It's not one of those manicured affairs - this is genuine woodland, steep in places, where the path winds between tall conifers and the light filters through in shafts. You'll find a small waterfall dropping through the trees, which is the real draw. Nothing spectacular, but atmospheric on a damp day.

The walk itself takes a couple of hours if you're not rushing. It's best suited to people who actually want to walk rather than just photograph trees - there's a fair bit of scrambling and some proper elevation involved. Families with young kids might struggle with the gradient, but teenagers keen on wild camping or forest exploration will find it genuinely absorbing. History types won't find much to hook onto here, but if you're after the feeling of being properly away from things, it delivers.

Getting there is straightforward enough from Carmarthen. The forest sits alongside a stream, and there's something about Welsh woodland in autumn or winter - the colour, the damp, the sense that you've actually stepped somewhere - that makes it worth the drive.
