Allt Llwyn-Teg

Getting up to Allt Llwyn-Teg means a proper walk through the Carmarthenshire hills, and it's one of those peaks that rewards you for the effort without being brutally steep. The summit sits around 500 metres, giving you sweeping views across the Tywi Valley and, on a clear day, toward the Brecon Beacons beyond. It's not a dramatic needle of rock - more a high grassy plateau - but that's exactly why it works so well as a family hike or a longer ramble if you've based yourself near Carmarthen.

The walk itself is straightforward woodland and moorland terrain, taking two to three hours depending on your route and fitness. Locals tend to start from the small car parks dotted around the lower slopes and work their way up through mixed forest before breaking out onto open ground. Bring a map and a compass because the visibility can drop without warning, as anyone who's hiked these Welsh hills knows.

It's worth the trip if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Quarry Lodge or Woodland Rise are both within a few miles - and fancy something less touristy than the better-known peaks. You won't find crowds or facilities up there, just decent views and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Wales in the first place. Go mid-week if you can, and pack waterproofs as standard.
