Allt Pont-Baldwyn

Drive inland from Newport and you'll find yourself in proper Welsh woodland - Allt Pont-Baldwyn is a forested section of the Afon Nevern valley that feels genuinely tucked away from the coast. It's not a formal visitor attraction with car parks and facilities, rather a working forest where you can actually walk without feeling herded. The river cuts through ancient woodland here, and the whole thing has that damp, shadowy quality you get in Welsh valleys - moss on everything, birdsong, the occasional grey wagtail flitting past. Walkers get the most from this place. There are decent paths that follow the river, and the terrain is manageable rather than punishing. You're looking at a good hour to two hours depending on how far you fancy going. It's the sort of spot where kids don't get bored because there's always something to investigate - a fallen log, a pool in the river, fungi you've never seen before. The forest feels alive rather than manicured. If you're staying at Llwyngwir Manor Holiday Park just down the road, it's an ideal half-morning escape when the weather isn't going full Pembrokeshire downpour. Admission's free, and there's usually enough space to pull off the lane. Go when it's been dry for a day or two - the paths get genuinely boggy otherwise.
