Allt yr Esgob

Dense woodland carpets the hillsides around Llandysul, and Allt yr Esgob sits among the best of it. This working forest feels properly Welsh - all steep slopes, rushing streams and that particular green light that filters through the canopy. Walking here requires a bit of map reading since there aren't any waymarked trails or visitor facilities.

Families with older children who don't mind a scramble will love exploring the unmarked paths that wind between the trees. The forest has that wonderful untamed quality you rarely find in more managed woodland areas. Dog walkers particularly rate it since there's plenty of space to roam without worrying about livestock.

Expect to spend a good two hours if you want to properly explore, though you could easily make a morning of it with a packed lunch. The going can be muddy after rain - proper walking boots essential. Best visited in autumn when the leaves turn, though summer offers the thickest canopy cover.
