Amble Quayside

The waterfront at Amble is where you actually understand why people settle on the Northumberland coast. It's a working fishing village first, tourist spot second - and that's precisely why it's worth the drive north from Alnwick.

You get a proper working harbour here, not some sanitised leisure development. Watch fishing boats come and go, spot the catch being landed, wander past weathered net sheds and actual fishmongers doing actual business. There's a decent stretch of sandy beach too, backed by grassy banks perfect for sitting with a coffee from one of the cafes dotted along the quay. The light here in late afternoon is genuinely lovely - that golden hour thing photographers go on about actually happens.

It's brilliant for families who don't need theme parks to stay entertained. Kids will happily mess about looking for crabs in rock pools for a couple of hours, and you get space to breathe. History types will find the maritime past interesting enough - this was a proper coal port once - but it's not heavy on interpretation boards or formal attractions.

Give yourself two to three hours if you're combining it with a beach walk. Bring layers; the wind comes straight off the North Sea and doesn't mess about. Free to wander, naturally. If you're staying at Woodland Chase Glamping nearby, this makes an easy afternoon excursion - close enough not to feel like a schlep, far enough away to feel like you've gone somewhere. Go at low tide if rock pools are your thing.
