An Creachan

An Creachan rises above Dunoon with the kind of straightforward appeal that makes it worth the effort if you're already in Argyll and Bute. It's a proper hill walk rather than a scramble, offering decent views across the Firth of Clyde without requiring technical gear or mountaineering experience.

The walk itself takes a couple of hours depending on your pace and where you start from. You'll get walkers and fairly fit families out here, particularly on clear weekends when the visibility actually justifies the climb. The views do deliver - Arran sits across the water, and on a decent day you can pick out Ben Lomond in the distance. It's not a dramatic Highland peak, but it's solid going and the kind of hill that feels rewarding without being punishing.

Timing matters. Midweek mornings are quieter, and you'll want to avoid the wet season if you can; the path gets properly boggy. The walk is free, obviously - it's a hill. Allow three to four hours for the round trip if you're taking it steady, longer if you're bringing kids who might need a rest halfway.

From Stratheck Holiday Park or Loch Eck Caravan Park you're well-positioned to take this on as a morning excursion. It works best if you're already holidaying locally rather than making a special trip to Dunoon just for this one peak. Pair it with exploring the town itself or tackling some of the other walks in the Cowal Peninsula for a fuller day.
