Annanhill Plantation

Dense woodland south of Dumfries that feels properly remote even though you're minutes from town. Annanhill Plantation is one of those Scottish Lowland forests where the trees close in overhead and you can actually hear yourself think - or not hear much at all, depending on how you feel about birdsong and rustling leaves.

It's a straightforward walk-through space rather than a destination with facilities. The paths wind through mixed conifers and broadleaves, decent underfoot even after rain, and the place works best for people who want a proper forest experience without needing a visitor centre or a cafe halfway round. Families with kids old enough to manage their own pace will get on fine here; toddlers might find it a bit samey after 20 minutes.

Go early morning if you can. The light's better and you'll have the place largely to yourself. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on which routes you take - the plantation's compact enough that you won't get properly lost, but there's enough ground to cover if you want a genuine walk rather than a quick stroll.

If you're based at Halleaths Caravan Park nearby, this makes a solid morning outing before heading into Dumfries proper for lunch or wandering round the town's Georgian squares. It's the sort of place that breaks up a holiday nicely rather than being a standout attraction in itself, but if you're after somewhere to stretch your legs and breathe in some forest air without the crowds, it does the job.
