Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort

The fort sits right on South Shields' seafront, its reconstructed Roman gateway announcing itself with genuine presence. What you're standing in front of is Arbeia, a supply fort that once fed Hadrian's Wall with everything from grain to swords. You can walk the grounds and peer into the remains of barracks, granaries and administrative buildings - the layout tells the story of military life around AD 160 onwards better than any placard.

The reconstructed gatehouse is the real draw. It's solid, imposing, and gives you an actual sense of scale that crumbling walls never quite do. Inside the modern museum building alongside, they've got finds from the site itself - pottery, tools, coins - all the small details that bring Roman soldiering to life. The audio guide is thorough without being draining.

Walkers will find this works brilliantly as part of a coastal loop. History enthusiasts could easily spend two hours here, though families with younger kids might squeeze it into ninety minutes before they lose interest in ancient latrines. The seafront location means you're not trudging inland - it's accessible and the views across the Tyne are rather lovely.

Based at either Parkdean Resorts Whitley Bay or Old Hartley Caravan Club (both within five miles), Arbeia makes a solid morning or afternoon visit before heading to Hadrian's Wall proper further inland. Admission is free, which removes any guilt about a quick visit. Go when the weather's decent - wind off the North Sea can be biting.
