Archbishop's Palace (site of)

The Archbishop's Palace near York is now just earthworks and foundations - there's no grand building to wander round, just the archaeological remains of what was once a significant medieval residence. It sits in the East Yorkshire countryside, and what you're actually looking at are the buried traces of where the Archbishop of York's country seat once stood. For history types, this is genuinely interesting. The site tells you something real about medieval power structures and how the Church's top brass lived outside the city walls. Most visitors will spend twenty minutes to half an hour here, walking the grounds and reading any interpretation boards if they're up. It's free to access, which helps justify the modest expectations.

Whether it's worth the detour depends entirely on your tolerance for archaeological sites without much visible structure. If you're already staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Bugthorpe Grange, Yapham Holds, or Wolds Glamping Pods are all within five miles - it makes sense as a supplementary walk rather than a destination in itself. Combined with a proper visit to York's city centre, the Minster, and the walls, this adds a layer of understanding about how the Church operated in the region. Kids will probably lose interest quickly unless they're keen on medieval history. Solo walkers and serious archaeology enthusiasts will get more from it. The surrounding countryside is pleasant enough for a ramble, at least.
