Argam Dikes

The earthworks at Argam, just inland from Filey, are Roman defensive ditches that most visitors walk straight past without realizing. They're not dramatic - no standing stones or crumbling towers - just a series of parallel banks and channels cutting across the landscape, best spotted when the light's low and the shadows give them form.

What you're looking at is a frontier line from around the 1st century AD, part of the Roman military infrastructure that stretched across northern Britain. The ditches themselves are fairly subtle unless you know what to look for, but that's partly their appeal. There's something rather satisfying about standing on a 2,000-year-old defensive position and recognizing the strategic thinking behind it - the Romans chose this spot deliberately, reading the terrain like a map.

History enthusiasts will get the most from a visit here, particularly those interested in Romano-British archaeology and frontier systems. It's not a site that demands hours - twenty minutes will show you the main features - but it works brilliantly as a short detour if you're already in the Filey area. The walk itself is pleasant enough, through open countryside, and you'll likely have the place to yourself.

If you're based at Lebberston Caravan Park, it's barely a drive away and makes a good addition to a broader North Yorkshire archaeology day. Combine it with a walk along the coast at Filey itself and you've got a proper morning sorted. Just don't expect visitor facilities or interpretation boards - this is archaeology in its raw state.
