Arreton Down

Rolling chalk downs stretch as far as the eye can see from this elevated spot just south of Newport. Arreton Down offers some of the best panoramic views on the Isle of Wight, taking in the Solent to the north and sweeping countryside in every direction. The walk up is fairly gentle - nothing too taxing for most fitness levels.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from a visit here. The summit gives you that proper sense of being on top of the island, and on clear days you can pick out Portsmouth across the water. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of uphill walking will enjoy it, though toddlers might find the trek a bit much.

Allow an hour or two if you're taking your time and want to soak up the views. Early morning or late afternoon light makes for the best photos, and you'll often have the place largely to yourself. The down is accessible year-round and there's no entry fee - just find somewhere to park nearby and start walking.

The Yurts at Burnt House Farm is particularly close, making it an easy evening stroll to catch the sunset.
