Ash Bed

A proper woodland walk through ancient ash trees just outside Calne - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Ash Bed is a small forest patch that draws walkers rather than coach tours, and that's entirely its charm. The trees are genuinely old, their bark thick and silvery, and the woodland floor stays soft underfoot even after rain.

You're looking at a couple of hours here if you take it slowly, maybe less if you just fancy a quick loop. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water. The paths are reasonably clear but it's worth going in dry weather - mud gets sticky in places.

Historically types will appreciate the fact these ash trees have stood here for centuries, watching over the Wiltshire landscape. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first half hour unless they're keen tree spotters. Proper walkers will get something from it though, especially in autumn when the canopy thins and you get proper light through.

If you're based at The Retreat Glamping nearby, it's a solid half-day option to pair with other walks in the area. Not worth driving more than twenty minutes out of your way for, but if you're already in north Wiltshire, don't skip it. Entrance appears to be free, though there's no obvious facility to maintain it - the fact it's still walkable is down to local goodwill.
