Ash Grove

Walking into Ash Grove feels like stepping back in time - ancient woodland that's been here for centuries, just a few miles east of Cambridge. The trees are genuinely old, with thick twisted trunks and a canopy so dense it darkens the path even on bright days. You're walking through proper English woodland here, the kind that makes you understand why people get sentimental about the countryside.

It's brilliant for a quiet morning walk if you're staying at somewhere like HappenOak Treehouse nearby. The forest floor is soft underfoot, carpeted with leaf litter and moss. There's no obvious visitor infrastructure - no café, no information boards - which is either refreshing or annoying depending on your mood. It takes about an hour to wander through without rushing, though you could spend longer if you're the type to sit on a fallen log and listen.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that this is genuine ancient woodland, not a modern plantation. Families with young children will find it peaceful rather than thrilling - it's a walk, not an adventure playground. In spring the bluebells are excellent; summer can feel a bit claustrophobic in the dimmer sections; autumn is when the light filtering through makes it actually worth the trip.

Free to access, though parking might require a bit of exploring to find. Best visited in the quieter months when you're not competing with every other Cambridge walker.
