Ash Island

You'll find Ash Island tucked away on the outskirts of Castle Douglas, a proper forest walk that cuts through woodland and brings you out onto a small island in the River Dee. It's not dramatic - no vertiginous cliffs or sweeping vistas - but it's exactly the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning ramble.

The walk itself takes the best part of an hour depending on your pace, threading through mature trees before emerging onto the island proper. Bring wellies. The paths get boggy and the ground is soft underfoot, especially after rain. There's something about being surrounded by tall ash and oak while the river murmurs alongside you that makes Castle Douglas feel genuinely remote, even though you're only minutes from the town.

Families with primary-school walkers will get the most out of this. It's not demanding enough for serious hikers but engaging enough that kids won't start complaining after ten minutes. The river crossings are manageable and there's enough space to let them poke about without worrying. Those after a serious moorland trek will find it a bit tame.

It's free and open year-round, though autumn and spring are when the woodland really sings. Winter can be waterlogged and muddy. If you're staying at Galloway Glamping or any of the caravan parks within a few miles - Mollance Farm, Kippford View or Glenearly - this makes a solid half-morning activity. Combine it with a walk around Carlingwark Loch or a proper look at Castle Douglas itself and you've got a decent day sorted.
