Astonfields Balancing Lakes

Two lakes that sit side by side near Stafford, linked by a narrow strip of land - that's the balancing act that gives this nature reserve its name. The water levels supposedly never quite match, creating an oddly hypnotic bit of Staffordshire countryside that's worth a potter round if you're in the area.

It's primarily a spot for birdwatchers and anyone who fancies a quiet walk. The lakes attract winter visitors - wildfowl, waders, the usual suspects - and there's something genuinely peaceful about standing at the water's edge watching the light change across the surface. Walkers doing a longer circuit through the area often combine it with other local reserves, though this one isn't a destination in itself - more a worthwhile detour en route to somewhere else.

Families with young children might find it a bit thin on activity after twenty minutes or so. There are no facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. It's free to access and the walk is gentle enough for most fitness levels, though the paths can be boggy after rain.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Stable Park Holiday Park is closest at under two miles - you could easily fit this into a morning walk before heading into Stafford proper or tackling longer routes around Cannock Chase. Don't expect drama, but do expect the sort of quiet corner that reminds you why people move to Staffordshire.
