Atlock's Pits

Atlock's Pits is a proper woodland walk just outside Skelmersdale, where you'll find yourself surrounded by old mining heritage hidden beneath the trees. The pits themselves are flooded now - old Lancashire coal workings that have transformed into something altogether more peaceful. You're walking through mixed woodland with the water visible through the gaps, and it's genuinely atmospheric once you've got away from the car park.

It's the sort of place where walkers will appreciate the quiet and the layered history underfoot. Kids might find the flooded pits interesting for twenty minutes or so, but it won't hold their attention for hours unless they're the type who like spotting birds and investigating tree roots. The paths are reasonable, though muddy in wet weather, so don't wear your best trainers.

Allow a good hour for a circular walk if you're not rushing. There's no café or facilities that I could find, so bring what you need. The whole affair feels free and accessible, which is exactly what a local woodland should be.
