Auchmaliddie

The standing stones at Auchmaliddie are one of those Scottish archaeology sites that rewards the effort of finding them - and finding them is half the adventure. You're looking at Bronze Age remains tucked into Aberdeenshire farmland near Turriff, far enough off the main road that most tourists miss them entirely.

What you'll actually find are weathered stone circles and standing stones, the kind of thing that makes you stop and think about who put them there and why, roughly 4,000 years ago. The landscape around them is proper rural - rolling fields, quiet roads, the sort of place where you genuinely hear nothing but the wind and birds. It's not dramatic like some Highland sites, but there's something compelling about the scale of effort involved: hauling these stones without modern machinery, then presumably leaving them to their own devices for millennia.

Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will get the most from Auchmaliddie. You won't spend hours here - twenty minutes to half an hour is realistic - but it's the kind of detour that feels worthwhile if you're already exploring Aberdeenshire. Pack an Ordnance Survey map rather than relying solely on GPS; the roads around Turriff twist about and the site isn't prominently signposted.

If you're based at East Balthangie Caravan & Camping Park, this is easily combined with other archaeological bits in the region. Don't come expecting visitor facilities or interpretation boards - this is raw history, left more or less as archaeologists found it.
