You're looking at the northern lights, visible on clear nights during winter months when solar activity picks up and the sky goes properly dark. The Aurora Borealis as a landmark refers to viewing spots around the Highlands near Inverness, where you've got decent chances of catching the show if you're patient and the weather cooperates.

Realistically, you'll need clear skies and low light pollution. Patience is essential - some nights you'll see nothing, other nights the whole sky erupts in green ribbons. It's free to chase them, but you're banking on luck and timing. Best bet is November through February when nights are longest. Allow several hours of standing about in the cold, ideally away from town lights.

If you're staying at Coulmore Bay or Bunchrew Caravan Parks, both within a couple of miles of Inverness, you're well-positioned for aurora hunting. Ardtower and Go Glamping at Loch Ness offer slightly darker skies further out. Families with young children will struggle with the cold waits and unpredictability. Keen photographers and serious sky-watchers will find it worth the effort if they hit a good night. Worth building into a longer Highlands trip rather than planning a journey specifically around it - the gamble isn't worth the guaranteed disappointment if clouds roll in.
