Walking through a reconstructed settlement of dark timber halls and thatched roundhouses feels properly authentic - not some theme-park facsimile but actual archaeology-informed recreation that shows you how people actually lived over a thousand years ago.

You'll wander between dwellings that smell of smoke and earth, peek inside domestic spaces set up with period tools and furnishings, and start to grasp just how cramped and communal Saxon life really was. It's not a walk-through museum with glass barriers and plaques - you're in the space itself, which makes a genuine difference. History buffs will spend a solid hour here; families with younger kids might grab forty minutes before heading to the rest of the trust's attractions.

The admission comes as part of Wildwood Trust entry, which makes it reasonable value if you're planning a half-day exploring the park. Best visited outside school holidays when it's less rammed. It pairs brilliantly with a stay at Cuckoo Down Farm Glamping just down the road - you can do a morning at the trust, then retreat to proper comfort in the evening. West Hill itself is unremarkable, but that's rather the point: this village doesn't announce itself. You have to actually seek it out, and that effort pays off.
