Avon Woods. Woodland Trust

A proper wooded respite just inland from South Brent, Avon Woods is a Woodland Trust site that does exactly what it says on the tin - gives you trees, paths, and breathing room without the tourist infrastructure. The woodland here is mixed deciduous, the kind of place where you actually hear birds rather than screaming children, and the paths wind through at a decent pace so you're never more than five minutes from somewhere that feels genuinely removed. It's not vast - you could walk the whole thing in under an hour if you're quick - but that's the appeal. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no pretension. Just woodland. The trails are straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though the ground gets muddy after rain. Bring proper boots if you've been to Start Bay Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and fancy something quieter than the beach crowds. Spring is lovely here - bluebells if you time it right - but honestly any season works if you need to decompress. It won't blow your mind with vistas or ruins or anything grandiose, but that's rather the point. This is the kind of place you stumble into expecting nothing and leave thinking you needed exactly that. Free to wander, no gates, no entrance fees. The Woodland Trust does things properly.
