Ba Wood

You'll find yourself in proper woodland walking country once you slip into Ba Wood, just outside St Albans. It's the sort of place where the trees get properly tall and the light filters through in that golden way that makes you forget you're only a few miles from town.

The woodland is straightforward - marked paths wind through beech and oak, with patches of younger growth and the occasional clearing that catches you by surprise. Most people do a loop in under an hour, though you could easily stretch it to ninety minutes if you're meandering. The ground can be muddy after rain, which is worth knowing.

Walkers will get the most from Ba Wood. It's not a destination vista or a destination anything really - it's a proper walk through trees where you might spot woodland birds and genuinely feel like you've stepped away. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though there's not much in the way of play equipment or facilities to speak of. History enthusiasts won't find much here; it's ancient woodland more than a historical site.

Coupled with nearby Almshoe Glamping - just over six miles away - you've got a nice pairing for a quieter Hertfordshire break. Stay under canvas, then come here for morning or afternoon woodland time. That's the proper way to do it.

Go early or midweek if possible. Weekends draw the local dog walkers, which isn't bad, just busier than you might want.
