Babcary Meadows Nature Reserve

Babcary Meadows sits just outside Yeovil and is one of those reserves that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick stroll. You're looking at wet meadowland that floods seasonally - it's the sort of place where visibility changes dramatically depending on the time of year and recent rainfall. Spring and early summer are genuinely excellent if you want to see wildflowers and migrating birds; winter can feel a bit bleak, all grey water and skeletal trees.

The walking is straightforward enough, with footpaths threading through the fields. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birdwatching - reed warblers, lapwings, and various ducks use this place properly. For families with younger kids it's a bit of a gamble. If there's standing water and open ground, they'll either love it or get bored within twenty minutes. Teenagers interested in ecology or photography will find it worthwhile.

Admission appears to be free, and there's no formal barrier stopping you, though facilities are minimal - don't expect a visitor centre or car park facilities. Allow an hour for a decent look around, maybe ninety minutes if you're photographing or watching birds seriously.
