Backburn Wood

A proper woodland walk near Lockerbie, Backburn Wood is the sort of place that rewards you for leaving the main road. You get actual forest here - tall conifers mixed with deciduous trees, the kind of cover that keeps things cool even on warm days. The paths are well-maintained and relatively flat, which means it's accessible without being boring.

Walkers will spend a solid hour or two poking around, though you can do a quick circuit in 45 minutes if you're pressed for time. The woodland floor is thick with moss and ferns, especially after rain, and there's enough space to feel properly away from it all despite being close to Lockerbie. Families with younger children do fine here - it's not too demanding, and kids generally enjoy the freedom to explore without much danger.

If you're staying at Hoddom Castle Caravan Park just down the road, this makes an ideal morning or afternoon outing. It breaks up a park-based holiday nicely, especially if the weather's not quite good enough for major attractions. Free to walk around, no visitor centre nonsense, just a working forest where you can actually breathe.

Go early if you can - mid-morning tends to be when the light's best through the trees and you'll have the paths mostly to yourself. Waterproof boots are a smart move even a day or two after rain.
