Bacon Engineering Sculpture

There's something wonderfully odd about stumbling across Bacon Engineering Sculpture near Attleborough. It's a gallery dedicated to the work of Francis Bacon - not the philosopher, mind you, but the sculptor whose monumental bronze figures are genuinely unsettling in the best possible way.

The pieces here are confrontational. Popes trapped in glass boxes, contorted human forms, a sense that something's gone wrong with the body. If you're expecting pretty landscape paintings, walk away now. But if you're interested in 20th-century art that actually provokes a reaction - that makes you uncomfortable and makes you think - this is the place.

Walking around the gallery, you get a proper sense of Bacon's obsession with isolation and distortion. The works are large, commanding, and they don't let you look away easily. It's the sort of place where you'll spend longer than you expect, turning back to examine details you missed the first time.

Realistic assessment: this isn't for everyone. Families with young kids will probably find it heavy going. But for anyone with even a passing interest in modern art, it's worth the detour from Attleborough. The gallery itself is unpretentious - no faffing about with fancy restaurants or gift shops that oversell themselves.
