Badger Hills

Badger Hills is a proper woodland walk on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, a few miles outside Market Rasen. It's the kind of place that catches you off guard - rolling forested slopes that feel like they shouldn't exist in this part of the country, where the landscape is usually dead flat. The paths wind through beech and oak woodland with occasional clearings that open up over the surrounding countryside. Nothing dramatic, but it's got real character.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The terrain's undulating enough to feel like exercise without being punishing, and the tree cover means it's manageable even when the weather's being temperamental. Families with kids aged eight upwards should find it interesting - there's space to explore off the main paths, and younger children tend to enjoy climbing over the fallen logs and spotting wildlife in the leaf litter. Expect a couple of hours for a proper walk depending on how many detours you fancy.

It's free to access and worth timing for late afternoon when the light filters through the canopy properly. The area's quiet even in school holidays, which is refreshing. If you're staying at Wolds View Country Park or Station Farm just down the road, this makes an excellent morning outing before heading back for lunch. The woodland gives you a genuine sense of the Wolds' character without the tourist infrastructure of bigger attractions.
