Balbirnie Collective

The Balbirnie Collective sits right on the doorstep of Glenrothes, in the heart of Fife's arts scene. It's a contemporary gallery space that punches above its weight for a town this size, showcasing work from emerging and established artists across painting, sculpture, printmaking and craft. The setting is intimate enough that you're not overwhelmed, but the programme rotates regularly so there's reason to return.

Who'll get the most from it? Serious art types, certainly, but also anyone staying at Balbirnie Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - which is practically on top of the place. If you've got young kids, it depends on the exhibition; some shows will bore them rigid within twenty minutes, others have interactive elements that work better. Worth ringing ahead to check what's on.

It's free to get in, which is proper refreshing. Allow an hour unless you're really stopping to study everything. Visit midweek if you can - weekends draw the gallery crowd and it loses some of its calm.

For a park holiday in the area, this gives you decent culture without having to trek into Edinburgh or Dundee. Chain it with a walk around Balbirnie Park itself - the loch and woodland are lovely, and it's metres from where you're camping. Kingdom Caravan Park over in Markinch is another option if you want slightly more space, though the Collective is realistically a fifteen-minute job from there anyway.
