Balloch Steam Slipway

The old slipway at Balloch is one of those places that catches you off guard - you're wandering around Alexandria thinking you know what to expect, and then suddenly you're looking at Victorian-era engineering that actually tells you something about how Scotland moved goods around in the 1800s. This isn't a grand museum with interactive displays and a café. It's a proper working slipway where steamships used to be hauled out of Loch Lomond for repairs, and what remains is honest and unpretentious.

You get to see the mechanical systems - the chains, the rails, the whole contraption that engineers would have worked with on a daily basis. It's the kind of thing that appeals enormously to anyone interested in industrial history or transport, but equally it's not so technical that families with younger kids won't find something to engage with. The waterside location is lovely, and it gives you a real sense of how central Loch Lomond was to the region's economy.

Opening is limited to weekends from April through October, 11 to 4, and it's free. You'll need maybe 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how deep you want to go into the mechanics of it all. If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots like Loch Lomond Sunset, it's an easy pop-over for a morning or afternoon. Don't expect crowds or facilities - that's rather the point. It's understated and genuine.
