Bamff Wildland

The moment you step onto Bamff Wildland near Blairgowrie, you're walking into proper rewilding territory. This isn't some manicured nature reserve - it's a working landscape where native woodland and moorland are being allowed to recover, with minimal human interference beyond essential management. You'll find yourself wandering through regenerating birch and pine forest, spotting evidence of wildlife returning: red squirrels if you're lucky, roe deer, and a decent variety of ground-nesting birds.

It works best for walkers with a genuine interest in conservation rather than those after Instagram moments. The trails can be muddy and unmarked in places, and there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no gift shop, no information boards holding your hand. Bring proper boots and an OS map. You can easily spend two to three hours here, though an hour's wander is enough if you're combining it with other attractions.

The location makes it convenient for a Perthshire caravan holiday. Nethercraig and Five Roads are both just under three miles away and extremely well-rated, while Blairgowrie Holiday Park offers a slightly larger-scale base. From any of these parks, Bamff works as a morning or afternoon venture, giving you space to explore the broader area - Blairgowrie itself has decent shops and restaurants.

It's free to access and open year-round, though late spring to early autumn gives you the best chance of spotting active wildlife. Winter walks are quieter but considerably wetter. Not for everyone, but genuinely rewarding if conservation and wild Scotland are your thing.
