Banc Craignant-Mawr

The walk up Banc Craignant-Mawr from Aberystwyth is proper graft, but the views across Cardigan Bay make it worthwhile. You're looking at moorland terrain with sheep dotted about, and on a clear day the perspective over the coast is genuinely impressive - you can see right across to mid-Wales countryside rolling inland.

It's not a technical climb; the path is well-trodden and takes about ninety minutes up from the town. The real appeal here is the solitude. You won't find crowds fighting for space at the summit like you do elsewhere. It's the sort of walk that feels like you've found something locals know about rather than a tourist trap.

Best done in decent weather when visibility stretches for miles. If it's wet or misty, the moorland loses its magic and becomes just a trudge uphill. Families with walkers aged ten and up will get something out of it, though younger kids might find the exposed sections tedious.

Stay at one of the nearby glamping spots - Forester's Retreat is barely half a mile away, making it an easy base. Tyn Ffordd Fach and Aber Camping are equally close. You can couple this with coastal walks around Aberystwyth itself, making a proper weekend of it without needing to move far. The walk is free, naturally, and you can start whenever suits you. Just leave early if weather's uncertain.
