Barbican Centre

Inside you'll find a cinema, concert hall, theatre and gallery spaces hosting everything from experimental theatre to major art exhibitions. The public spaces are genuinely free to wander - you can explore the lakeside terraces, bridges and courtyards without paying a penny, which is more than most London attractions offer.

The real appeal depends entirely on what you're after. Architecture enthusiasts will spend hours picking apart the design - the raw concrete, the geometrical precision, the way water runs through the whole thing. Culture vultures should check what's on in the theatres and galleries. Families with older kids might enjoy a film or concert, though younger ones tend to find the maze-like corridors confusing rather than fun.

Allow 1-2 hours minimum if you're serious about it, longer if there's a performance. It's genuinely free to explore the grounds, though anything inside (cinema, shows, exhibitions) has admission charges. From Lovat Parks nearby, it's a straightforward trip into the City - easily combined with a walk along the Thames or time in nearby parks like Finsbury Circus. February to September is best for the terraces and outdoor spaces.
