Barlavington Down

The walk up Barlavington Down, just outside Petworth, rewards you with proper views across the Sussex weald - the kind of landscape that actually justifies the hike. It's not a dramatic peak by any means, but on a clear day you're looking at miles of rolling hills and patchwork fields that stretch towards the South Downs. The climb itself is gentle enough, nothing that'll leave you gasping, though it does get a bit muddy after rain.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. You won't find a café at the top or any facilities worth mentioning. What you get is quiet - the kind of quiet you can't find near Petworth town centre - and a real sense of being away from it all. Families with older kids who enjoy a proper ramble will find it worthwhile. If you're after a quick stroll with spectacular vistas, you'll be disappointed.

Allow a solid two hours from Petworth, including the walk and time to potter about once you're up there. There's no entry fee and no gates to worry about. Spring and early summer are best - the view's sharper and you won't be trudging through mud. If you're camping at Woodfire at Westerlands or the Graffham site, this makes a cracking half-day venture, breaking up the usual park routine. Bring a packed lunch rather than expecting to find anything at the top.
