Barley Valley Nature Reserve

Head out from Exeter and you'll find yourself at Barley Valley Nature Reserve, a proper slice of Devon countryside that doesn't require climbing three hours up a moorland path to reach. It's a working landscape rather than a manicured attraction - fields, woodland edges, and the kind of habitat that actually matters for wildlife rather than just looking nice for Instagram.

The main draw is birdwatching and gentle walking. You'll spot finches, woodpeckers if you're lucky, and in winter the reserve fills with visiting species. The trails are straightforward, nothing that'll knacker your legs, though waterproof boots are non-negotiable in wet months. Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about spotting things, or pop in for a half-hour stroll if you're between other plans.

Families with patient kids aged seven-plus will get something from it. Younger children tend to lose interest once they realise there's no playground, but if they're into wildlife or bug-hunting it's worth the trip. Adults who actually like birds will find it absorbing.
