Barr-nan-Cabar

The walk up Barr-nan-Cabar, just outside Dunoon, takes you to one of those viewpoints that actually justifies the effort. Most people do it as a straightforward up-and-back hike from the town side - allow two to three hours depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The summit itself is nothing fancy, just a cairn and the views, but on a clear day those views stretch properly far. It's the sort of walk that appeals to families with older kids and serious walkers rather than casual strollers; there's scrambling involved and it can be muddy underfoot after rain. Free to access, open year-round. The surrounding Dunoon area makes sense as a base - Glenfinart Caravan Park sits just 2.2 miles away, handy if you want accommodation sorted before tackling the peak. Loch Eck Caravan Park and Stratheck Holiday Park, both within five miles, offer similarly convenient staging posts. If you're doing a proper walking holiday in Argyll, slot this in as a solid half-day activity rather than your main event. The real appeal is the ease of access from town and the fact it gives you a genuine sense of accomplishment without demanding a full alpine expedition. Worth the detour if you're based nearby, but don't go miles out of your way for it.
