The farm shop at Barra Castle is one of those places you stumble upon and think, why don't more working farms do this? It's genuinely useful - proper local produce, not the tired supermarket nonsense. You can pick up whatever's in season, chat to the people who actually grew it, and feel like you've made a sensible choice rather than just grabbing something wrapped in plastic.

The kitchen side is where it gets interesting. They do lunch and coffee, using ingredients from their own land when they can. It's not fancy or trying to be - just good food made properly. The sort of place you'd genuinely want to return to, not somewhere you feel obliged to Instagram.

Inverurie's close by, which helps with logistics. If you're staying at Hillhead Caravan Park or the posh bothies at Glamping Bothie, neither is more than a few minutes away, so it works as an easy morning stop or lunch break without major detours.

Families will find it relaxed rather than spectacular - kids won't be bored, but they're not going to be entertained for hours either. Foodies and anyone serious about eating well will get more from it. The farm itself is working land, so there's genuine activity going on, not some sanitised visitor experience.

Really worth a proper visit if you're in Aberdeenshire, especially if you're planning your own meals from the caravan. Better still if you time it right and catch their kitchen when something seasonal is on the menu.
