Barscraigh Hill

The walk up Barscraigh Hill takes roughly forty minutes from Dalbeattie and rewards you with proper views across the Solway Firth towards the Lake District fells. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a rounded bump in the Lowlands - but that's rather the point. You get the satisfaction of a hill walk without needing scrambling skills or specialist kit, which makes it ideal for families who've tired of flat coastal trails and want something with a bit more breath to it.

From the top you can pick out Criffel across the water and on a clear day the entire sweep of northern England's mountains. The ground underfoot is mostly grass and heather, boggy in patches after rain but nothing treacherous. Allow two hours for a leisurely round trip if you're bringing kids along, though strong walkers will knock it out in ninety minutes.

Stay at one of the holiday parks clustered nearby - Kippford Holiday Park and Sandyhills Bay are both within easy striking distance - and you've got yourself a proper little base. The walk fits well with coastal pottering around Kippford village itself, which sits on the water's edge with fish and chips worth the detour. There's no infrastructure on the hill itself, so pack water and a snack. The whole expedition works best in settled weather; Dumfries & Galloway can turn damp quickly, and mist will strip the view entirely. Early autumn when the heather blooms is lovely, though summer school holidays mean busier paths. Worth doing once you're in the area, though not a destination in itself.
