Barton Wood

The woodland walk through Barton Wood feels properly restorative - all tall conifers, dappled light, and the kind of quiet you don't get in towns. It's a genuine forest rather than a managed woodland trail, so paths can be a bit muddy and overgrown depending on the season, but that's half the appeal. You're a short drive from Bideford, which makes it an easy morning outing if you're staying at one of the nearby campgrounds like Roeys Retreat or Broad Park.

The wood itself isn't vast - you can walk the main loop in under an hour - but it's worth lingering if you're into birds or just need headspace. There are a few informal paths branching off, though they peter out rather than leading anywhere dramatic. Families with young walkers will manage fine on the main track; older kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour.

No facilities that I could spot, no car park as such - just pull in where you can near the entrance. Admission appears free. Summer's your best bet weather-wise, though winter walks can be moody if that's your thing. It's not a destination in itself, but coupled with Bideford's proper riverfront and a nearby coastal camp, it slots nicely into a longer day out. Bring decent boots if there's been rain.
