Bateson's Wood

Walk into Bateson's Wood and you're into proper Lancashire woodland - the kind where light filters through in patches and the ground squelches underfoot after rain. It's a straightforward forest, nothing fancy, but that's rather the point. You get decent woodland trails, the sort that let you switch off for an hour or two without needing a map or special knowledge.

This works best for walkers after something gentle between Clitheroe and the wider Ribble Valley. Kids will manage it fine if they're not the type who need climbing frames every five minutes, though the woodland floor can be muddy and there's not much in the way of dramatic vistas to hold attention for hours. If you're after dramatic landscapes, the higher moorland around Pendle Hill is more thrilling. But for a quiet morning walk with decent trees and space to breathe, it does the job.

Cross Lane Caravan Park sits just two miles away, making it ideal if you're basing yourselves nearby - you can pop out for a woodland walk without the drive. Pendle View Holiday Park and Wigwam Holidays Ribble Valley are further afield but still within reach for a decent excursion from your caravan or glamping site.

There's no indication of admission charges or facilities on site, so go prepared with sturdy boots and weather-appropriate kit. Best visited autumn and winter when the woodland's quieter and the paths are clearer.
