Beaulieu Heath Enclosure

The Beaulieu Heath Enclosure sits quietly in the New Forest landscape near Brockenhurst, a Bronze Age monument that most visitors to the area walk straight past without realising what they're looking at. It's essentially a circular earthwork - a low bank and ditch arrangement that once contained a settlement or ceremonial space several thousand years ago. On the ground, it doesn't announce itself with fanfare. You need to know roughly where to look, and even then it takes a moment for the rings to make sense.

What you get is a proper sense of deep time. Standing inside that ancient boundary, you're looking at the same view someone would have seen around 1500 BC, give or take. The heath stretches out, gorse and heather, the kind of open ground that's easy to defend and easier still to see across. For history buffs and archaeology enthusiasts, this is the real thing - not a reconstructed visitor experience, just the actual remains.

It's free to visit and requires no special access. Allow twenty minutes to an hour depending on how much time you want to spend reading the landscape and thinking about what was here. The walk from Brockenhurst is manageable but you'll want proper footwear - it's boggy in places after rain. Better still, if you're based at Long Meadow Campsite nearby, it makes a decent stretch-the-legs addition to a New Forest break rather than a destination in itself. Worth seeking out if you're already in the area, but don't rearrange your holiday around it.
