Beckford Coppice

Three miles south of Tewkesbury, this patch of ancient woodland sits quietly on the edge of the Cotswolds, offering proper forest walking without the crowds you'll find at more famous spots. The coppice follows traditional woodland management - you'll see evidence of centuries-old practices where trees were cut back to encourage new growth, creating that distinctive multi-stemmed look.

Walking here feels genuinely wild, with well-worn paths threading between oak, ash and hazel stands. Spring brings a carpet of bluebells that's well worth the visit, though any time of year offers good rambling. The terrain's gentle enough for families, but the lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments.

Birdwatchers do particularly well here - the mixed habitat attracts everything from woodpeckers to warblers. Dog walkers love it too, as there's plenty of space to let them off the lead safely.

It's free to explore and makes a lovely addition to a Cotswolds break. Several holiday parks sit within easy reach, including Bredon View Holiday Park and Croft Farm Water Park, both under five miles away. The woodland connects nicely with longer walks towards Bredon Hill if you're feeling ambitious, or simply provides a peaceful hour's stroll when you fancy escaping the caravan site for a bit.
